1. Food intolerance tests are available for purchase without an order from a physician

With a quick Internet search, you can purchase a food sensitivity test with just a few clicks of a button! Whether or not your physician orders a food sensitivity or intolerance test, you can still buy these online. That being said, however, we do not suggest buying these tests all willy-nilly because there can be risks. Always consult a doctor before taking a food intolerance test.

2. Not all food intolerance tests are equal

As you may see in an online search, there are several types of food intolerance tests available. Some use blood samples whereas other use saliva or breath samples. 3. The results of a food intolerance test do not replace the services of a nutrition professional

If you think that you can just buy the food intolerance test, read the results and be cured, then think again. While a food intolerance test can give you valuable information, it should not be used to replace a Registered Dietitian. Once you know to which foods you may be intolerant, take this information to a Dietitian so that they can formulate a custom meal plan for you.

4. You can actually consume foods to which you are intolerant

If certain foods give you issues, then why would you want to consume them? Unlike a food allergy, you may be able to eventually consume your problematic foods. One method to consider is the elimination diet, which is characterized by eliminating your problematic foods for some time. After several months without your problematic food, you reintroduce the foods one at a time and monitor for symptoms.

You may find that some foods from your food intolerance test results can actually be incorporated regularly! Otherwise, many food intolerances can be controlled even with the occasional consumption of the problematic food.

5. Food intolerance tests are not completely backed by science

As mentioned before, food intolerance tests can be useful tools to help you and your Registered Dietitian formulate a plan. However, current research questions the accuracy and validity of these food sensitivity tests. That being said, analyze testing results with a hint of skepticism. Use the results as a means to test out your food intolerances.

For example, if the test says you are intolerant to avocadoes, wheat, and bananas, do an elimination diet and try to reintroduce these foods one at a time. You may find that you actually can consume bananas and wheat without issue!
